Ondokuz Mayıs University, Psychology Department started the admission of students for the first time in the 1992-1993 academic year. Graduates who complete the program by fulfilling all the requirements receive a Bachelor's of Arts in Psychology. The undergraduate program has been accredited by FEDEK (The Association for Evaluation a Accreditation of University Programs in Mathematical, Natural and Social Sciences) for a period of five years, from January 24, 2024, to September 30, 2029.
The undergraduate program aims to equip students with communication, learning, and practical application skills. It focuses on teaching theoretical and conceptual approaches as well as scientific methods in various fields of psychology. In addition to professional competence, the program also emphasizes the development of general and transferable skills such as critical and intercultural thinking, sound judgment, and social and ethical responsibility. The Department of Psychology is a four-year, eight-semester undergraduate program. The department also offers an optional English preparatory program lasting two academic terms. The language of instruction is Turkish. In the first two years, students primarily take compulsory courses; in the third and fourth years, they take both compulsory and elective courses. Psychology education in the department is provided in the subfields of experimental psychology, developmental psychology, applied/clinical psychology, social psychology, psychometrics, and industrial/organizational psychology. The department further provides its students with opportunities for internships, field study, and independent academic projects. There are 2 Professor, 2 Assistant Professors, 2 full-time lecturers, and 6 Research Assistants working in the department. A thesis-based Master’s program in psychology has been offered since the Fall semester of 2014. The department also accepts students from the Department of Sociology for a double major program (DMP).
Graduates of the Department of Psychology are qualified for employment in a variety of public institutions, such as the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of National Education, and the Ministry of Family and Social Services. Employment opportunities are also available in private educational institutions, psychotechnical assessment centers, and various sectors of industry. Additionally, graduates may pursue academic careers (through Master's and PhD programs) and continue their scientific studies in the field at the university level.
